The Best Freediving Spots in India (Ranked by an Instructor)

India has 7,500 km of coastline and, until recently, almost no freediving culture. That's changing fast. Here's our honest ranking of where to dive, having trained students at every one of these.

1. Andaman Islands — the undisputed best

Havelock offers what nowhere else on the mainland can: 15–30 m visibility, living hard-coral gardens at breath-hold depths, and walls that drop straight into blue. Turtles on nearly every session, reef sharks on the outer sites. Season: December–April. If you make one freediving trip in India, make it this one.

2. Pondicherry — the best place to learn

Our home base. Visibility is honest rather than spectacular (5–15 m), but conditions are consistent, boat rides are short, water is warm year-round, and the artificial reefs sit at perfect training depths of 8–18 m. Add the French Quarter and it's the easiest certification weekend in the country. Season: Feb–Apr and Aug–Oct.

3. Goa — the convenient all-rounder

Grande Island and the southern coves deliver calm, protected training water plus barracuda schools and turtles. Infrastructure is unbeatable — flights, stays, food — making it ideal when you're combining diving with a holiday or a non-diving partner. Season: October–May.

Honourable mentions

• Netrani Island, Karnataka — a volcanic islet with genuinely good visibility; limited operators
• Lakshadweep — Maldives-grade lagoons with heavy permit logistics
• Kovalam, Kerala — decent conditions, growing scene
