PADI Freediving Certification Explained: Levels, Costs & What They Unlock

PADI is the world's largest diver-training organisation, and its freediving program is the most widely recognised certification ladder in the sport. Here's how it works, level by level.

Why certification matters

A certification card is not a diploma for your wall — it's an access key. Dive centres worldwide require proof of training before letting you join sessions, rent equipment, or board boats. A PADI rating earned in Pondicherry works in Dahab, Bali, and the Bahamas.

The ladder

PADI Basic Freediver — 1 day, ₹8,500

Pool-only introduction: theory, breathwork, static and dynamic apnea. Credits fully toward the next level. Details →

PADI Freediver — 2–3 days, ₹18,500

The full entry certification: eLearning, pool skills, and open-water dives to 16 metres, plus buddy rescue. This is the card that unlocks freediving worldwide. Details →

PADI Advanced Freediver & Master Freediver

Beyond PADI Freediver, the ladder continues into free-fall, mouthfill equalization, and depths past 24 and 40 metres. Sea Critter doesn't currently offer these levels — get in touch if you're set on training with us for them.

Common questions

Does certification expire? No — PADI ratings are for life, though after a long break any good centre will suggest a refresher.

Can I skip levels? No, and you wouldn't want to: each level's physiology genuinely requires the previous one's adaptations.

PADI vs AIDA vs Molchanovs? All three are legitimate; skills cross over and centres recognise equivalents. PADI's advantage is sheer global footprint — more centres honour it, in more places, than any other card.
